With its diverse microclimates, Hermannshöhle offers optimal conditions for overwintering many different bat species. Since the cave climate always corresponds to the average temperature of the cave environment, there is concern that global warming could lead to a deterioration in conditions for one or another bat species.

The climate of Hermann's Cave, its location at 600 meters above sea level, its size, and its complex, diverse structure provide optimal conditions for overwintering for many bat species. In addition, its geographical location on the edge of the Eastern Alps provides a nearby wintering ground for many bats that spend the summer in the Hungarian Plain.

The abundance of bats has been known since 1856. Counts of hibernating bats have been carried out since 436764503721 the counts were permitted
